From the encyclopedia Vittorio Spreti:

The family Mucciolo originated in the city of Toledo de Spania in the year 711 with the names of Mulcios Y Orosos Albos. According to Spreti (Encylopedia of Italian Nobility), there are indications that around the year 1000 A.D. the Mucciolo family went to Marchigiana where the first generation (in Italy) was born.

During the period of the Moors invasion of Spain, the Mucciolo family left Spain and found refuge in Italy. During this tumultuous period, all of Spain suffered during this invasion. Many people lost their liberty and the upper class had to leave the country or be put to death. The enclyopedia states that the Mucciolos who left Marchigiana and settled in other parts of Italy "produced persons of first class and nobility."

One branch of the Mucciolo family went to Bologna where Giovanni Marino Mulcios was elevated to the Order Gerosolimitano. In the year 1116 he married Carlotta Luchin of the Order Cavallerasca de Calatrava, whose family also orginated in Spain.

Another branch went to the city of Urbine, San Marino, where the name Mucci or Muccioli was first used. In the year 1300, Cielo Mucci was called Mucci di Ciole; all of his heirs were called Mucci di Ciole, which later became Muccioli and Mucciolo.

The first person in San Marino who took the name Mucciolo was Simone, in the year 1350. Simone had two sons, Luigi and Matteo. Matteo became Councilman of San Marino. In 1450 he became Captain of the Republic of San Marino and served in that capacity until 1452.

Some of the Mucciolos of San Marino were called Mucciolino. Gregorio Mucciolino was elected Captain Regent (Capitano Reggente) of the Republic of San Marino in 1402. The Mucciolo family in San Marino not only had the title of Captain Regent, but also enjoyed the "prestige of nobility and wealth." Such "spiritual and grand heritage" continued to his descendants. A son of Simone Mucciolo also served as Captain Regent from 1481 to 1490.

Not all of the Mucciolos remained in San Marino and Bologna. Luigi Matteo Mucciolo went to Urbine in 1494 and was a "Professor of Tradition and Culture." Luigi had a daughter named Angela who married Carlo Vertichi.

In the city of Ferrara the Mucciolos were noted as "illustrious gentleman of nobility." Luigi was sent as Ambassador to Julio the Second to ask for the hand of Signorina de Pesaro. He accomplished his objective and was compensated with many priviledges. He became a nobleman and was Mayor of the city of Pesaro from 1511 to 1513.

During his reign he built the chapel of San Bastiano and Catarina. Benedetto Muccioli, the son of Bartolomeo Muccioli from Ferrara, painted the chapel. In the city of Ferrara, Bartolomeo and Benedetto were artists. Another son of Bartolomeo, Almerico, was known as a great artist. Antonio was a Canon in the Cathedral of Bologna and was also Secreatry to Cardinal Madrucci. Simone and Paolo were Captains in 1570. Camillo was "Commandant of the Royal Guard" and "Advisor of War" to Enrico the Fourth, King of France, from 1589 to 1610. Luigi de Simone had another son named Giovanni Marino who was the "head of all the branches of the Muccioli family".

The descendants most notable in the family were

  • Giovanni Battista, Captain in 1600,

  • Giovanni Valerio, 1633,

  • Matteo Luigi, 1697, and

  • Giovanni Battista, also Captain in 1697.

  • Another Giovanni Battista, born in 1709 and died in 1800, was also a Captain; his lineage ended because he had only four daughters, Camilla, Francesca, Teresa and Elenora.

  • Guido died in Rome in 1706. He was an apostolic monk, in the Basilica de Santa Maria in the city of Trastevere.

  • Antonio, another son of Luigi, was born in 1744 and was an abbot.

  • Marino was beatified in 1758 in the church Santa Maria Maddalena de Seriolis in the city of Pannabil.

  • Francesco was elected senior judge.

  • Giusseppe Maria was an "illustrious" Brother in the Minore order. In 1780 he compiled the catalogue of Celebrated Codes in the Encylopedia Malatestiana de Cescna.

  • Giovanni, born in 1813, was a Monsignor.

  • Gregorio became Bishop of Agatopoli in 1823.

  • Giovanni Marino de Matteo, in 1491, was Captain of the Troop of Francesco Maria de la Rovere of the Duke of Urbine. He became Duke on February 2, 1510.

The King of Spain confirmed that all the "family Mucciolo" was nobility and had the title of Duke. This honor was bestowed not only on those in Spain but those in San Marino and Bologna. The King of Spain confirms also that the title was already given to all the branches of the family. All the branches, as declared by the King of Spain on April 12, 1920 were re-recognized as old Spanish nobility. Today, all of the branches of the Mucciolo family are still considered nobility.

Giovanni Marino had two sons, Anastasio and Battista. From Anastasio was born Camillo; from Camillo came Antonio who had Giovanni Marino and another Antonio; the younger Antonio had Giovanni Marino who left one Luigi; Luigi served as Colonel over the Pope's Guards in 1811. The branch from Urbine and the branch from San Marino have the tile of Count.

Carlo Mucciolo, born in 1858, was Ambassador to Venice, and Director of the Mosaic Studio of the Vatican. He is the author of the great portrait (grandioso quadro) of the Apparition of Jesus at Saint Mary Alacocque. In later years it was reproduced in mosaic in the Vatican Basilica across from the tomb of Pope Alessandro VII.

Count Ugo Muccioli was born May 7, 1872 in Rome. His father was Count Augusto who was made Count in 1841, and his mother was was Antonio Lupi de Signore. Ugo married Rose Scandurra on February 20, 1912 and had a daughter, Dora, born Feb 13, 1913. Ugo had a sister Adelaide (born 12-20-1869), Ortensia (2-25-82) and a brother Ricardo (6-24-1884) all born in Rome. Ugo migrated to Buenos Aires, (Calle Lavalle, 1390).

The Neopolitan branch comes from Julio Muccioli who married Geltrude Gigli. They had a son named Edgardo who was born in 1872. He was official "Caveliere of the Corona d'Italia". They had another son, Georgio, a daughter Marcella, and Filiberto, who also was "Commendatore of Corona d'Italia". They also had another daugther Gisella, a son Theodoro, and Vincencio Pio who had a son Julio Adriano. From this branch came the descendants of the Mucciolos of Naples. This branch expanded into Salerno. These are the only Mucciolos of the Neopolitan branch known from the years 1600 to 1927.

It is known that today there are around 70 Mucciolo families in Castle San Lorenzo. Francesco Mucciolo fought as an officer under Garibaldi during the Unification of Italy.

Antonio Mucciolo was Francesco's son. Antonio has several offspring, Francesco, Micheli, John, Giuseppe, Pasquale, Carmino, Angelina and Rosina.

Micheli, who was born in 1881, emmigrated to America in 1900. He married Angelina Nappa in 1911 in New York. They had eleven children, of which seven survived. They were (Marc) Antonio (Anthony), Maria, Francesco, Giovanni, Rosa, Elena and Stella.

Anthony was born in 1913 in Flushing, New York. He married Giuseppina (Josephine) Faso in 1941 in Flushing. Anthony entered the US Army in 1943, and served during World War 2 in the 63rd Infantry Division, Signal Company. Anthony was wounded in action April 16, 1944 in Kunzelsau, Germany, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart, among many other citations.

Anthony and Josephine have three sons,

  • Michael Russell (born 1942),
  • Gene Ross (born 1948)
  • Russell Anthony (born 1955).

Micahel is married to Ramona and currently lives in Michigan. Michael has three daughters, Michelle, Christine and Jennette.

Gene married Helen Kathleen Scully in 1969 and has one son, Joseph Anthony, born July 17, 1971, and one daughter, Meagan Ruth, born October 2, 1974.

Gene's son Joseph Anthony married Tanya Fox and have two daughters, Marguerite Antoinette, born September 12, 1994, and Estelle Rosalie, born April 18, 1998.

ADDENDUM

Addendum by Michele Del Verme in Prignano Cilanto (Salerno) Italia, 1985.

I have taken the opportunity to explain the preceding writing which was written by Victorio Spreti in the 7th volume Appendice in the "Encycloeida historica nobiliare Italiana" on page 375. All of the following is taken from this source. See volume 4, pg 378 for a complete notice which was made public in the volume.

Giovanni Muccis, 14th of January 1057 married Catarina, daughter of Francesco Borgia (Borja). A son was born, Pietro, who married 9-13-1083 Margurita Albos o Albino. From this marriage the Mucciolos became related to the celebrated family Borgia, who originated a great saint, Saint Francesco Borgia III, General of the Order of Jesus, two popes, Calaisto III and Alessandro IV, two celebrated Cardinals, Brother Albino, a Cardinal if Saint Croce in Jerusalem, and Cardinal of Santa Maria Nuova.

It is said in the genealogy that the Italian surname derives from Ciolo Mucci, which became Mucci di Ciolo and finally Muccioli or Mucciolo. It was right for the family Mucci to take possesion in Italy of the Republic of San Marino, and up to the 13th century owned the territory known as "Monte Ciolo", and it is not surprising that the name of the possession is the one that from the beginning the members of this noble family were very distinguished.

In fact, in the "catalog" of the Republic of San Marino, in the year 1368 and 1371, we find one Mucciolo di Ciolo as a "Console." He was the father of Gozio, also "Console", from where we are assured comes the noble family "Gozzi di San Marino" in which members were and still are responsible, for the historical Republic.

The roots of the family in the Sanmarinese history and culture were born from this notable period and from the family responsibilities of the office of "Consolari." The branch from Urbino from the office of "Gonfaloniere" recover in 1494 by Luigi was confirmed with the "diploma ducale" on Feb 2, 1510. The same Luigi was elected to the Consiglio di Credenza in Pesaro in 1511. Anastasio honored the Mucciolo family as Patriziato Romano to be perpetuated until 1620.

The papal bulletin of Pope Allesandro III, dated April 14, 1180, recorded that there are 47 chapels in the castle "Palazzo dei Mucci", and that one them was San Floriano; one was La Torre Cheeia, was built by the Muccis around 1394; It is near "Castrum Baciae", today it is called "borgo Pace." The family owns all the land in San Angelo in Lizzola and in the section Montecchio. The cupola of the Chapels of Saints Sebastian and Caterina, in the church of San Domenico of Urbino, was painted by Benedetto Mucciolo from the branch of Ferrara.

It is mentioned that in the branch of Ferrara there is one Captian Polo (1570) and one Captian Paolo.

In the branch Marchigiano it is necessary to correct a few omissions. Giovanni Battissta (1600), is the second son of Giovanni Marino, his son Sebastiano died March 20, 1597. Giacomo, born July 28, 1583, had Pier Francesco born June 21, 1632. Tommaso Nov. 20, 1666, his son Francesco was born August 1, 1707. Sante was born Sept 14, 1739. Giuseppe was born Oct 16, 1771. Salvatore was born July 26, 1811, he had Augusto and Giulio who were the heads of the branch of the second generation.

If you want to find any of the things about San Marino, Pesaro and Roma, they are all in "Consulta Araldica." The corrections are all for the male side of the family.

It is also necessary to talk about another branch of the family Mucciolo. In approximately 1700, Giuseppe Antonio Mucciolo, born June 14, 1664, went to Auletta, Salerno and established his residency there May 24, 1702. He is the son of Antonio Muccioli and Clarice Albini. Antonio was brother to Giuseppe Marino Carlo. There is no doubt whatsoever that the branch of Mucciolo di Auletta is a branch of the Mucciolos in which all honors and titles have also been bestowed. And so you will find in the Consulta Araldica like it is written and I have said that these titles are only for all the male Mucciolo.

The following is the genealogical tree for the Mucciolo di Auletta:

Giuseppe Antonio, born June 14, 1664, married Auletta 24 May 1702. They had Nicola born November 7, 1714. He had a son Onofrio, born 24 Jan 1761. He had Nicola who was born Feb 4, 1766. Then came Onofrio born July 18, 1821. Paolo was born July 27, 1857. He had Diodata February 1, 1898. It is said that the King of Udine tried to take all titles of nobility away from the Muccioli Marchigiani.

In conclusion, the branch of Auletta has legal claim to relatives with all the branches of Mucciolo who live in Castle San Lorenzo. These male Mucciolos of San Lorenzo have the right to all the perogatives and joy of nobility. With the marriage of Antonia Lupi with Augusto Muccioli as Patriatch of San Marino, derives the family Muccioli-Lupi di Montione, now residing in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
